Course Description: The courseexplores the human-nature connection and attraction to nature, identified as biophilia, and the benefits of incorporating elements of nature, both real and simulated, into built spaces. We explore the ways that our lives are dependently and beneficially intertwined with nature. We look at the trend towards Biophilic Design —integrating nature into architecture to enliven biophilia’s restorative properties. Illusion, illusions of nature, and sky illusions will be examined in relationship to architectural design, and Biophilic Design in particular. Finally, we’ll delve into the purpose, creation, and applications of sky-image ceilings.
Following this course you will be able to:
- Define biophilia – its evolutionary origins and benefits to human life.
- Discuss the purpose and tenets of Biophilic Design.
- Summarize the use of illusion and illusions of nature in architecture.
- Explain the purpose, creation, and applications of sky-image ceilings.
