SUMMARY:Webinar: Action Now: Accelerating Pathways To Decarbonization
DESCRIPTION:Offered by AIA Seattle (times given are Pacific Time) \nFor many years\, our focus as a professional association has been on reducing or eliminating operating carbon from new buildings. But the significant scale and urgent timeframe of our climate crisis demand interventions that are broad and immediate\, and that recognize decarbonization is directly correlated to health\, safety\, and equity in our communities. \nConsidering: 1) Reducing embodied carbon in new construction\, including the construction process; 2) Electrification of buildings; and 3) Retrofitting existing buildings\, this year’s thought leadership summit will explore high-impact actions in policy and practice that make actionable differences in atmospheric carbon over the next five years. \nWhat are the data-driven interventions that will pay the highest dividends immediately\, and what will position us to stay on the path to 2030 targets and net-zero 2050? What are the regulatory and financial frameworks necessary to support this scale and urgency? \nCLASS CREDIT6.5 LU/HSW \n\nWEBINAR SCHEDULE + REGISTRATION\nFour (4) live Zoom webinars will take place on Tuesday\, April 21\, 2020 between 8:30AM – 5:00 PM (Pacific Time). \nJoin us online to learn from thought leaders and identify immediate actions we can take to accelerate decarbonization in the built environment.

SUMMARY:Online CE Webinar - Enhancing Interior Spaces with Indirect Lighting (Boston Light Source)
DESCRIPTION:ESL104 | Enhancing Interior Spaces with Indirect Lighting (Boston Light Source)  \n1.0 HSW – Register for Zoom CE Webinar\, required. \nInterior spaces can best be enhanced with layer lighting designs\, which incorporate a combination of direct and indirect lighting. This course explores how indirect lighting can be used to improve the comfort level of a space and allow it to be used in multiple ways. Participants will learn lighting design techniques for dramatically illuminating ceilings\, walls and backlighting through translucent materials. This course also examines the unique properties of LED luminaries and how they should be selected and specified to insure quality and performance. \nLearning Objective 1:• Analyze the basic principles of interior indirect lighting design. \n• Reflecting light off of ceilings from a cove using wide to medium beam angles \n•Reflecting light off of walls from a slot using medium to narrow beam angles. \n• Reflecting light through translucent materials from a light box. \nLearning Objective 2:Calculate the optimal fixture placement\, setback and intensity based on the desired effect and application. \nLearning Objective 3:Determine optimal light color and distribution to enhance finish colors and textures. \nLearning Objective 4:Specify energy efficient LED luminaries to insure quality and performance.• Determining useful lifetime• Measuring beam angles and output• Understanding the color and quality of light• Insuring consistence of lighting characteristics.

SUMMARY:Online CE Webinar - Comparative Study of Wood and Aluminum Windows in Commercial Buildings (Pella)
DESCRIPTION:Program No. P117: Comparative Study of Wood and Aluminum Windows in Commercial Buildings (Pella) \n1.0 HSW – Register for Zoom CE Webinar\, required. \nBoth wood and aluminum windows are being used extensively in today’s commercial and institutional buildings\, especially in education\, health care\, and offices. Using project case studies from across the United States\, this program examines how window selection criteria (aesthetics\, cost\, energy efficiency\, and sustainability) impact the design process. \nAs we look at commercial window applications which include punched openings\, storefronts\, and curtain walls\, architects will learn some of the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of wood or aluminum windows in each application. As we compare aesthetics\, cost\, energy efficiency\, and sustainability; architects will improve their ability to objectively advise their clients on what is the best window solution for their next project. \nLearning Objectives:• Describe how the aesthetic attributes of wood and aluminum windows contribute to interior environments that are livable\, comfortable\, productive\, safe\, and beautiful.• Identify the initial costs associated with wood and aluminum windows and how they impact the life cycle assessment of the window systems.• Compare how the physical attributes of wood and aluminum windows contribute to the overall energy efficiency of the building envelope.• Use energy modeling to determine the annual energy costs for wood and aluminum window systems in different climatic zones.

SUMMARY:A Collaborative Approach to Fall Prevention by Design
DESCRIPTION:The Ruane Friar Development Center (RFDC) built by Dimeo Construction Company and designed by Perkins Eastman is a transformational project for Providence College.  The project won the AIA-RI 2018 Merit Award in the Educational/Intuitional category. \nThe new center blends a state-of-the-art training facility for the men’s basketball team with a branding element focused on recruiting. Each space and graphic is purposed to support the students physical and social needs as well as being a beacon for young prospects deciding where to take the next step out of high school. \n{{providence-college-friar-42}} \nWhen: May 21\, 20195:30pm Networking / 6:00pm Presentation / Tour Follows     \n1 LU|HSW \nProvider: Dimeo Construction Company \nSpeaker: Bob Kunz\, Corporate Safety Director\, Scott Eaton\, Project Manager\, Erik Sanford\, Director of VDC/BIM \nToo often\, fall protection comes at the expense of design intent\, but this need not be the case. During the session\, we will review the newly codified OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart D standard and VDC tools for evaluating fall protection systems planned (or existing) for roofs.  Using the newly completed Providence College Friar Development Center project as a model\, Dimeo Construction developed a decision making flow chart developed for this new OSHA standard. Through discussions between owner\, architect\, and contractor\, BIM tools and 2-dimensional drawings were used to form the foundation for a project based constructability review and implementation of improvements\, while maintaining design integrity and aesthetics.  This collaborative presentation will reflect upon the importance of the new standards and their real-life application. Participants will leave the presentation with knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart D and learn how effective collaboration can lead to prevention by design. \nA tour will be provided after the presentation. Please RSVP by sending an email to Lori Corsi at LCorsi@dimeo.com \nLOCATION:Providence CollegeLocated behind the Field House at 74 Sandringham Rd. Enter at the front of the Friar Development Center\, and someone will be present to direct you to the presentation.
