SUMMARY:DESIGNxri Featured Speaker Series with Friedrich St. Florian
DESCRIPTION:RISD Metcalf Auditorium at Chace Center\, 20 North Main Street Providence RI 02903 \nIn the 1960’s and 1970’s\, Friedrich St.Florian belonged to a group of young architects whose search for a new architecture was fueled by their fascination with new technologies and new materials. It was a euphoric moment in history when dreams and visions for a better future seemed justifiable. St.Florian’s intellectual curiosity soon shifted to the prospect of creating an architecture that is less physical and more ephemeral. The Imaginary Space installation at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm in 1969 brought him international recognition and an invitation to join the newly founded Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT. There\, St.Florian continued his experiments with ephemeral space and designed a luminous bridge for the Charles River. \nSt.Florian’s winning design for the World War II Memorial in Washington\, DC\, the result of a national competition\, is his most visible work to date. It adds an entirely new type to Washington’s unique memorial landscape. It celebrates the triumph of democracy in mid 20th century while enriching the lives of those who visit. \nThough perhaps his most notable contribution to Providence and Rhode Island was his vision of a new Providence cityscape. Outlined on a napkin at a then popular Providence eatery\, St.Florian along with fellow architects William Warner and Irving Haynes\, laid out the plan to uncover the Providence River (then covered for parking lots and roadways) and move the train tracks (originally along Burnside Park) that made way for the creation of Providence Place Park and other new developments for the city. \nFriedrich St.Florian continues his architectural practice to date. He has designed a number of unapologetic modern residencies and continues to participate in major urban design projects throughout the world. In addition to his practice\, St.Florian has contributed significantly to the formation of two generations of aspiring architects during his forty two years as Professor of Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design. He served as Dean of Architectural Studies for eight years and Chief Critic of the European Honors Program in Rome for four years. RISD’s architecture program flourished during his years of leadership. St.Florian has won numerous awards for his achievements in the field of architecture. His visionary drawings are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris. He is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Brown University bestowed upon him the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts\, honoris causa in 2006. \nRefreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:PARKing Day Providence
DESCRIPTION:PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists\, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks. \nThe project began in 2005 when Rebar\, a San Francisco art and design studio\, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005\, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement\, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world. \nThe mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space\, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated\, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out! \nIn 2013\, AIAri teamed up with RI ASLA and Transport Providence to bring the first PARK(ing) Day to Providence. Working in close collaboration with the City of Providence\, the Downtown Improvement District\, and with incredible support from the Department of Public Works\, Providence had over 30 parklets in its inaugural year. \nThis year\, PARK(ing) Day Providence is looking to expand its presence with 23 parklets Downtown and by creating a protected bike lane on Broadway on the West Side of Providence. \nPARK(ing) Day is held on the third Friday of September\, rain or shine\, and this year\, will take place on Friday\, September 18. To find out more about creating a parklet or to be a sponsor\, visit www.parkingdaypvd.org.

SUMMARY:Gallery Night: Hagerty House 1.011
DESCRIPTION:AIAri Windows on Architecture\, 158 Washington Street\, Providence\, RI 02903 \n{{hagerty{{In the 1930s\, Walter Gropius worked with Marcel Breuer to design a house in the costal Massachusetts town of Cohasset. This epitome of principled design\, Hagerty House\, is as much a work of progressive genius as it is an emblem of tortured compromise. Over 75 years after its completion\, at a time when the notion of the modernist canonical precedent is a rarity\, Hagerty House 1.011 is an experiment in architectural versioning and representation. The authors of this project do not claim any design authority of the building\, but have taken the retrospectively contested features of the house as an implied invitation to make delicate and minor revisions\, while strictly and respectfully adhering to the principles of the original work. Through modern day techniques of drawing\, rendering\, and printing\, Hagerty House 1.011 provides new insight into the original design and shows the power of representing ideas in the space of paper.

SUMMARY:RI Energy Code Training: Tiverton Library
DESCRIPTION:{{tiverton}} \nThe new Tiverton Library is approximately 23\,800 square feet and includes a community meeting hall\, café\, children’s library\, teen room and exterior public courtyard spaces. While Tiverton did not seek LEED Certification from the U.S.Green Building Council\, the building design incorporated LEED v.3 New Construction standards and included a workshop on environmentally friendly library design. \n The Tiverton Library was designed to have a predicted site Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 43 kBtu/s.f./yr. The actual EUI will be determined after a full year of operation. The project is predicted to reduce annual energy costs per square foot by 45% compared to the baseline model. \n Active energy efficiency measures include a high performance building enclosure\, a dedicated outdoor air system\, CO2-based demand controlled ventilation\, variable frequency drives for fan speeds\, high efficiency condensing boilers for both heating and domestic hot water\, reduced light power densities\, LED lighting\, automatic occupancy sensors\, and daylight dimming controls. \n  \nClick here to register. \n  \n{{energy-code-sponsor}} \n

SUMMARY:Frank Costantino: Plein Air Painting- 2-Day Workshop (Intermediate-Advanced levels)
DESCRIPTION:{{constantino{{Participant’s abilities should include basic drawing\, a comfortable level of watercolor experience and some plein-air painting experience on easels. With an expected diversity of skills\, capabilities may vary widely\, but instruction will be tailored to each individual’s level. \nOn the scenic ground of Slater Park and in the facilities of RIWS\, Frank will be offering an exciting plein-air watercolor workshop. This intensive and comprehensive workshop will expose students to the freshness and spontaneity of using the watercolor media on site\, and painting the wonderful scenes in the Park or adjacent areas. With daily demonstrations and theory\, the instructor will explain the visual choices for subject and site selection\, arranging composition\, color palette choices\, various methods of color mixing\, end expressive brush techniques – while capturing their own vision of their subjects. \nWith individual review sessions\, and private demos during the painting day\, each participant will learn ways to simplify subjects\, while learning to see and achieve the dynamics of light\, contrast\, value\, movement\, space\, texture\, etc\, which make paintings come alive. \nExperimentation will also be encouraged\, to bring a heightened awareness of the many approaches for painting en plein-air. Relaxed group reviews will occur at the end of the day with ample opportunities for unstructured painting and time after class during longer daylight hours. \nExpectations are for a supportive environment from which the collective energies and interests will allow everyone to learn much more than otherwise struggling to discover alone. Expectations are also for enjoying the unique environment and inspiration of the Park\, and having fun while learning. \nFrank Costantino has conducted numerous workshops for students all over the US\, and is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society\, North East Watercolor Society and the Salmagundi Club in NY. Davies\, Jr. Career & Technical High School is a 220\,000 square foot multi-story career and technical high school located in Lincoln\, RI. The school continues to implement projects as part of its five-year capital project plan to reduce operational energy use and improve indoor environmental quality at the school. In recent years\, the school has begun to implement programs and policies in accordance with NE-CHPS 2.0 Policy and Operations requirements. The school recently completed a comprehensive lighting and lighting controls upgrade project that was executed through National Grid’s Project Expeditor Program. \nThe Rhode Island Energy Code Compliance Baseline Study completed in 2012 shows that the two areas where projects are least compliant with the energy code are building enclosure and lighting. This project exceeded the Rhode Island code requirements for lighting power density by over 40% as calculated by the Building Area method of the State Building  Code – 8 (SBC-8). \nTour participants will see the project lighting and controls and gain understanding of the design that led to the significant energy savings. In addition\, through participating in National Grid’s Project Expeditor program\, the project achieved  a simple payback of approximately 2 years. \nAIA and code official education credits are available for this tour (1 hour credit). \nRegister

SUMMARY:International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum • 6th Annual Architectural Symposium: Eve of the Gilded Age
DESCRIPTION:  \n{{stark{{In Newport from the 1830s through the 1870s\, talented architects designed  many influential buildings\, introducing stylistic elements and a grand scale that distinguished their work from the earlier Colonial and Federal periods. These innovations are the very characteristics which would become the hallmarks of the late 19th century Gilded Age. Despite often being overlooked\, this period saw the construction of scores of houses built in revival and European influenced styles – from the Gothic Revival flourishes of the 1830s and 1840s through the mansard and Italianate compositions of the 1850s and 1860s\, to the picturesque rusticity in the work of Upjohn and Hunt in the 1860s and 1870s. By the dawn of the Gilded Age\, Newport played a leading role as an inspiration to the Colonial Revival style. \nEve of the Gilded Age: Newport Architecture 1830 to 1880 will offer a unique opportunity to examine this time period and its architects’ influence on Newport’s landscape. This sixth annual one-day symposium includes lectures by prominent architectural historians and tours of four magnificent buildings. \nREGISTRATION: $110 includes lectures\, house tours and lunch. SUMMARY:Webinar on Reducing the Risks of Nonstructural Earthquake Damage – A Practical Guide (FEMA E-74)
DESCRIPTION:https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5715354165370897410 \nFailure of nonstructural components–which includes all those components that are not part of the structural system\, such as architectural\, mechanical\, electrical\, and plumbing systems\, as well as furniture\, fixtures\, equipment\, and contents–have accounted for the majority of earthquake damage in several recent U.S. earthquakes. In many cases\, businesses\, schools\, hospitals\, and other organizations had to spend excessive time and dollars for clean-up and repair due to nonstructural failures; therefore impeding continued operations and rapid recovery. Nonstructural component failures can impede safe evacuation\, delay rescue\, and cause additional hazards such as fire following an earthquake. The purpose of this webinar is to describe in simple terms the sources and types of nonstructural earthquake damage\, as well as effective methods and guidance for reducing the potential risks of injury and property loss from future earthquakes. \nS.E.\, is a practicing Structural Engineer and President of Estructure\, Inc. in Oakland\, California. Maryann has over 30 years of experience designing for post-earthquake functionality and is an expert in the seismic protection of nonstructural components. She was the Project Technical Director for FEMA E-74 and co-Project Technical Director for FEMA P-1024\, Performance of Buildings and Nonstructural Components in the 2014 South Napa Earthquake. Maryann was recently selected to serve as Project Technical Director for the ATC-120 Project\, Seismic Analysis and Design of Nonstructural Components and Systems. \nrior to the training\, it is recommended that participants view a 30-minute independent study training\, IS-325\, Earthquake Basics: Science\, Risk\, and Mitigation. The IS-325 training provides basic information on earthquakes\, its impacts\, and general mitigation techniques. The training may be accessed here. \nach participant of the FEMA E-74 webinar will receive an electronic certificate documenting 1.5 PDHs. Each additional participant sharing the registrant’s computer may obtain PDH documentation using a form that will be provided following the webinar. \nThe webinar is funded by the National Earthquake Technical Assistance Program (NETAP)*\, is free to U.S. registrants\, and limited to 500 registrations. To register online\, click here. \nAttending this webinar is not equivalent to attending a FEMA E-74 in-person training\, which is typically a 6 hour session and includes a class exercise. In-person training courses on FEMA E-74 are available through NETAP. \n2015 ATC Webinar Program. The 2015 ATC Webinar Program is under development. SUMMARY:Drawing Ambience: Alvin Boyarsky and the Architectural Association
DESCRIPTION:20 North Main St (also enter on 224 Benefit Street) Providence\, RI 02903 \n{{risd{{Alvin Boyarsky and the Architectural Association highlights the impressive collection of drawings assembled by Alvin Boyarsky during his pivotal tenure as chairman of the Architectural Association (AA) in London\, from 1971 until his death in 1990. During his time leading the school\, Boyarsky orchestrated an ambitious exhibition and publication program that situated drawing as not only a representational tool\, but as a form of architecture in its own right. \nDrawing Ambience features an iconic group of drawings by some of the most prominent architects and artists of our time\, including Frank Gehry\, Zaha Hadid\, Rem Koolhaas\, Daniel Libeskind\, Mary Miss\, Eduardo Paolozzi\, Bernard Tschumi\, and Shin Takamatsu. The drawings are complemented by a series of related folios published by the AA representing the work of Peter Cook\, Peter Eisenman\, Coop Himmelblau\, and Kisa Kawakami\, among others. Together\, these works provide an unprecedented opportunity to explore both the techniques and the imaginative spirit of drawing practices that permeated this time of change and experimentation in architecture worldwide. \nDrawing Ambience: Alvin Boyarsky and the Architectural Association is co-organized by the RISD Museum and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum\, part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis; the exhibition was on view at the Kemper Art Museum in late 2014.
