SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Optimizing Healthcare Design: Insights from Discrete Event Simulation in Emergency and Multi-Clinic Projects
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Academy of Architecture for Health \nRegister \n\nAs healthcare systems face increasing demands for high-quality\, efficient care\, facility design is crucial in meeting operational and patient-centered goals. Discrete Event Simulation (DES) is a cutting-edge tool that enables architects\, planners\, and healthcare professionals to visualize and optimize complex patient flows and resource utilization. This session showcases how DES was applied in two emergency departments and two multi-clinic buildings\, addressing critical operational challenges and offering long-term design solutions. The speakers will discuss how across all four projects\, DES provided a data-driven framework to test scenarios\, evaluate performance metrics\, and implement evidence-based design improvements. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies for incorporating DES into future healthcare facility design projects\, ensuring operational efficiency and patient-centered care. \nEmergency Department Projects: \n\nImportance: DES was instrumental in modeling patient triage\, treatment times\, and discharge processes to accommodate current and future patient volumes.\nChallenges: Handling unpredictable patient influx\, managing resource allocation\, and reducing care delays in high-stakes environments.\nLessons Learned: Simulation uncovered inefficiencies\, prompting design adjustments that reduced congestion and improved patient flow.\n\nMulti-Clinic Building Projects: \n\nImportance: In multi-specialty clinics\, DES helped optimize spatial layouts and resource sharing (e.g.\, imaging\, labs) to streamline patient flows.\nChallenges: Predicting and coordinating department interactions and managing complex\, overlapping patient journeys.\nLessons Learned: Early DES integration allowed for flexible space planning and workflow improvements\, enhancing staff efficiency and patient throughput.\n\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\nUnderstand the role of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) in healthcare facility design.\nIdentify key challenges in implementing DES in healthcare design projects.\nEvaluate the impact of DES on optimizing patient flow and operational efficiency.\nApply lessons learned from real-world case studies to future healthcare design projects.\n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with the Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH). \n1 LU|HSW

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Commercial - Passive House for Multi-family
DESCRIPTION:Presented by CLEAResult \nRegister \nThe Passive House design and construction principles have been growing in popularity due to its proven success in improving the quality of new building construction and ongoing operations\, while remaining cost competitive. In the past several years\, various state governments (including Massachusetts) have adopted Passive House certification as an optional compliance pathway for energy code compliance. This training session provides an introduction to the Passive House rating system\, which is a rigorous standard for energy efficiency\, comfort\, indoor air quality\, sustainability\, and quality assurance in both commercial and residential buildings. Participants will gain an understanding of the main principles\, design strategies\, costs and benefits associated with passive energy design principles\, and Passive House certification. \nLearning Objectives\n\nUnderstand the principles of the Passive House rating system\nBecome familiar with the requirements and criteria of Passive House\nRecognize the benefits and challenges of implementing Passive House\nGain practical insights into Passive House design and construction\n\nPrerequisite Knowledge\nThis training is designed for individuals with a basic understanding of building design and construction. No prior knowledge of Passive House is required\, but a familiarity with energy efficiency concepts could be beneficial. \nHSW Justification\nThe Passive House certification’s goal is to improve indoor air quality\, sustainability\, and the overall building user’s experience. This certification addresses all of the following topics: Project management\, Programming and analysis\, Project planning and design\, Project development and documentation\, Construction\, and evaluation. \n  \nRICode C114-23

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Residential - Chapter 11 - One-and-Two Family Dwelling Code
DESCRIPTION:Presented by CLEAResult \nRegister \nChapter 11 of the International Residential Code covers energy efficiency\, but the requirements of this chapter can also have significant building science implications. RI has adopted the 2024 IECC and understanding how these requirements affect the building science is critical in designing and delivering safe\, healthy and energy efficient homes. \nLearning Objectives\n\nDurability – airtightness\, thermal resistance and vapor control all work together to mitigate moisture and condensation risk.\nHealthy Indoor Air Quality – airtightness combined with mechanical ventilation deliver superior air\nComfort – thermal resistance produces consistent interior surface temperatures to ensure\nEnergy Efficiency – modulating these control layers properly will deliver a building that consumes less energy for space conditioning.\nA summary of how Rhode Island Energy technical support and the code enhancement incentives can help in establishing a higher level of compliance.\n\nHSW Justification\nA healthy home is a dry\, clean\, safe\, ventilated\, maintained\, and thermally controlled environment. On average people spend at least 50 percent of their day inside their homes. Unhealthy housing puts residents at risk of health issues such as asthma and other chronic diseases. Due to the age of the housing stock in Rhode Island\, residents are at greater risk of health issues associated with building design and housing conditions. \n  \nRICode R113-23
