SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Residential - Weatherization\, Insulation and Building Science
DESCRIPTION:Presented by CLEAResult \nRegister \nThis course will discuss the basics of observing what is needed for a home to be energy-efficient and safe for occupants throughout all seasons. \nLearning Objectives\n\nThe course will begin with insulation basics and then extend to all areas of making a home more energy efficient which will not only help the homeowners’ energy consumption but will also benefit their health\, welfare\, and the environment.\nLearn about the fundamentals of Building Science\, Insulation and Energy Consumption through Heat Transfer by Conduction\, Convection and Radiation.\nWhat is infiltration and why is it important? Learn about air infiltration\, air sealing\, and air quality by reviewing statistical figures on lack of insulation and moisture.\nNew Homes Existing Homes. Learn about construction basics\, vented vs. unvented attics\, HVAC systems and green misconceptions.\nA review of how Rhode Island Energy’s technical support\, rebates and energy incentives will be discussed along with how they can assist with achieving improvements.\n\nHSW Justification\nThe U.S. Department of Energy released the results of the National Evaluation of the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). The result of these studies provides the success of its endeavors. Energy efficiency is a primary focus of Weatherization\, and the evaluations showed that single-family households saved an average of over $200 on energy bills annually. Yet\, the most inspiring benefits of the program had nothing to do with energy at all. It’s a proven fact that the “non-energy” benefits associated with weatherization and retrofit activities are huge! The health benefits were some of the most impressive results to come out of the evaluations. According to these peer-reviewed findings\, participants in the Weatherization program can reduce the need for emergency room visits and other health-related costs\, saving families thousands in non-energy related benefits. \n  \nRICode R24-105

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Residential & Commercial - The Voyage of Vapor: Moving Through the Building Envelope
DESCRIPTION:Course Number BOI 108 \nPresented by Benjamin Obdyke \nRegister \nCourse Description: \nThis course examines the risks of vapor-closed wall and roof assemblies in residential wood-framed construction and introduces effective design strategies for moisture control using vapor-open building materials. Participants will explore the building science behind vapor diffusion\, condensation\, and dew point management. Through technical insights\, case studies\, and product-integrated solutions\, the course demonstrates how vapor-open assemblies improve drying potential\, reduce moisture-related failures\, and enhance overall building durability. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExplain how water vapor moves through wall and roof assemblies and the impact of seasonal temperature and humidity changes.\nIdentify the risks of vapor-closed assemblies\, including the potential for condensation\, mold growth\, and material degradation.\nRecognize the benefits of vapor-open assemblies\, such as increased drying potential and tolerance for installation variation.\nDescribe the role of rainscreens and cold roofs in promoting vapor flow and reducing moisture entrapment.\nIdentify the correlation between vapor diffusion and drying capacity of the building envelope.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Residential - Zero Energy Homes - Designing HVAC for Lg. Spaces w/Low Loads
DESCRIPTION:Presented by CLEAResult \nRegister \nPlease note this program expires November 17\, 2026. If course is not available for use\, it will replaced by CLEAResult. \nThis course focuses on the HVAC and ventilation provisions of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) including correct sizing and design of HVAC systems\, and ventilation strategies that ensure enhanced indoor air quality. \nLearning Objectives\n\nLearn about the “house as a system approach” to achieve optimum design for a low load home along with the importance of equipment selection and design considerations.\nWe will go over proper sizing\, system design\, duct leakage testing and\nVentilation strategies such as Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) for optimal indoor air quality will be\nLearn about the importance of contractor training and tenant/homeowner education for achieving a comfortable home that will stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.\nA review of how Rhode Island Energy’s technical support\, rebates\, and energy incentives along with how they can assist with achieving improvements will be summarized.\n\nHSW Justification\nFew building professionals seem not to fully grasp the relationship between health\, ventilation\, and humidity. When designing an HVAC system for high preforming tightly built homes\, ventilation and humidity have a big impact on occupant wellbeing. A good system will more than pay for itself in reduced heating and cooling costs and designers have a responsibility to help ascertain healthy and safe environments. \n  \nRICode R24-107

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Commercial - RI 2024 Energy Code Update
DESCRIPTION:Presented by CLEAResult Register The new commercial energy code will impact current design and construction practices\, as well as compliance and enforcement strategies. This course will explore some of the most significant updates from Rhode Island’s current 2018 IECC-based commercial energy code (SBC-8 with RI amendments) to the unamended 2024 IECC. In doing so\, Rhode Island will skip over 2021 IECC\, jumping directly to the more aggressive 2024 IECC\, resulting in a steeper learning curve than usual. Rhode Island building managers\, designers\, contractors\, developers\, and code officials are encouraged to attend and learn about the most significant code updates. \nPrerequisite Knowledge\nA knowledge of the energy code section of the Building Safety Act\, the State of Rhode Island’s SBC-8 Energy Code for commercial new construction and International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) HSW Justification The training will cover how the required code updates – particularly the energy code updates taken together with the mechanical code updates – are expected to benefit public health\, safety and welfare in commercial buildings. Occupants feel better\, in terms of both physical health and mood. Some examples of performance issues that affect comfort are temperature extremes\, humidity extremes\, excessive air speed from ventilation\, unpleasant odors\, and noise. These standards help to ensure safe air quality for occupants. \nLearning Objectives\n\nLearn about the energy code section of the Building Safety Act and changes to the Rhode Island Energy Code that will be required.\nExamine the impact of the upcoming code updates to the energy code compliance procedures which include Prescriptive and Performance.\nLearn about the upcoming energy code requirements for permit applications\, permit document sets\, and energy inspections.\nThe training will cover how the required code updates – particularly the energy code updates taken together with the mechanical code updates – are expected to benefit public health\, safety and welfare in commercial buildings.\nWe will discuss: Building envelope – Prescriptive R-value and U-values for envelope assemblies and whole building airtightness • Mechanical – Equipment efficiency requirements including energy recovery and economizer requirements • Electrical – Lighting controls and electric-ready provisions • Plumbing – Energy conservation requirements\n\n  RICode C24-122 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
