SUMMARY:Webinar: Pella presents\, Window Solutions for Historic Buildings
DESCRIPTION:1 HSW \nZoom Registration required \nCourse Description: We often think of building projects as new construction. However\, the reality is that in any given year\, there are typically more building renovation and rehabilitation projects undertaken by owners than there are new construction projects. Only a small percentage of these existing building projects fall in the category of “historic” with the associated public programs and design restrictions that go along with that designation. The majority are motivated by changing owner needs\, energy concerns\, maintenance considerations\, and general modernization or upgrade requirements. In all of these cases\, windows are often a topic of interest and concern. Should they be replaced or can they be repaired?  If they are replaced\, what are the options? Which option is best for a particular situation? Understanding how to answer these questions gives architects the ability to work with their clients to make informed decisions and improve the overall outcome of projects. \nLearning Objectives: \n • Discuss the historic significance of existing windows in buildings\, including their historic role in providing natural daylight and ventilation for buildings. \n • List the National Park Service’s guidelines for historic window rehabilitation and describe how they contribute to a sustainable building rehabilitation. \n• Design a window rehabilitation plan for buildings that includes recommendations for preservation\, maintenance\, repair\, replacement where needed\, design for missing historic features\, alterations/additions\, and energy retrofitting. \n• Evaluate window replacement options for existing commercial and institutional buildings\, including an assessment of how each option addresses structural performance\, daylighting\, natural ventilation\, noise control\, energy efficiency\, cost\, code requirements\, and lead abatement.

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Sky Factory presents\, The Restorative Impact of Perceived Open Space
DESCRIPTION:1 LU/HSW \nZoom Registration required \nCourse Description:  In this course we explore the impact of interior environments on human performance and wellness. We explore the role natural daylight and perceived open space play in modulating cognitive function\, and how we can engage our memories of natural environments to enhance occupant health and productivity in enclosed interiors. The course introduces a cognitive approach to design that underscores the value of perceived open space as a restorative attribute that engages our biophilic memory. Two spatial reference frames present in nature\, the perceived zenith\, the highest point above the observer\, and the perceived horizon line\, the farthest point before the observer\, can be recreated in an enclosed interior space by staging an appropriate illusion to alter our perception of space. Recreating these fundamental spatial maps through an effective illusion enables a range of wellness benefits normally associated with interiors applying more traditional biophilic design principles. \nLearning Objectives \nFollowing this course you will be able to: \n\nExplain why reducing daylight to its elemental components\, brightness (irradiance) and color temperature\, in enclosed interiors can alter our perception of daylight’s inherent spatial nature. \nDiscuss the role circadian photoreceptors and retinal cones play in regulating circadian entrainment and how the environmental context in which our physiology detects daylight is as important is the light itself.\nDescribe the neural pathways that link our sensorimotor system (how we move through space) with executive function (how we think)\, thereby generating our sense of place.\nSummarize the malleable nature of human perception and how bi-sensory illusions in enclosed interiors can evoke spatial memories to alter our perception of those spaces.\nDiscuss the implications of interior design on human health and productivity.
