SUMMARY:Theo Jansen & Strandbeest - presented by RISD/Brown STEAM
DESCRIPTION:Theo Jansen is a Dutch polymath who began an investigation in 1990 building large wind-powered mechanisms out of electrical conduit pipe that are able to traverse beaches. These creatures\, called strandbeest are a fusion of art and engineering. He once said in a BMW advertisement\, “the walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds.” Theo sees himself as a mechanism through which these beasts evolve and develop\, just as animals in nature do through reproduction. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, but there are a limited number of seats\, so get ’em while they’re hot! To register\, visit the event page. \nIf you would like to get involved on a deeper level\, there are two workshops coming up that you can participate in creating strandbeests\, which will be shown to Jansen himself on his visit. As a reminder\, here are the dates and times of those events: \nWorkshop 1 – Creating the pieces Saturday\, November 8 BDW\, Barus and Holley 10am-1pm \nWorkshop 2 – Assembling the pieces Saturday\, November 15 RISD ID Building 3rd floor 10am-1pm \nPresented by RISD STEAM\, Brown STEAM\, RISD Government Relations\, and RISD Programming Board.

SUMMARY:Gallery Night : Providence- Tangram Architecture and Urban Landscape
DESCRIPTION:LOCATION: AIAri Window on Architecture\, 158 Washington Street\, Providence\, RI 02903\n\n{{tangram-croppe{{Winning Europan 1 (1988-1989) – a bi-annual European design competition for young architects – with a daring design for flexible living in The Hague\, was the starting point of TANGRAM. At the office now work around 15 members of staff\, led by Charlotte ten Dijke and Bart Mispelblom Beyer. \nTANGRAM consistently explores the possibilities and consequences of compaction\, both in theory and in practice. Sustainable building in high densities\, the only way to keep up with the constant need for quality space in the Netherlands\, while preserving the valuable green landscape. Building in a higher intensity makes it possible to preserve the\, what is left\, open space in the country and around the cities\, which is necessary to continue to function properly. In this way the contrasts\, the built and open spaces\, their qualities\, are retained\, so necessary for a pleasant living environment.

SUMMARY:RI Commercial Energy Code: Overview
DESCRIPTION:This is the overview session for a series of trainings that are aimed at educating participants on the state energy code and better building practices in order to achieve higher performance in the field. We will focus on issues in the code that are open to interpretation or that may appear difficult to implement and use building science to clarify what is important and why. This general workshop covers a range of topics including an overview of the commercial RI Energy Code\, envelope requirements and lighting and mechanical provisions. \n (AIA and BPI credits available) \nFor more information please contact Kathy Tyler Arthur at Kathleen.Arthur@csgrp.com. \nLOCATION: RI Builders Association\, East Providence\, RI\n

SUMMARY:RI Commercial Energy Code: Envelope and Building Science
DESCRIPTION:This course presents basic building science principles\, including the forces that affect the movement of air and moisture through building assemblies and materials. Forensic building investigation results are utilized to illustrate the structural and energy performance degradation that occurs when building science principles are not followed. The current commercial RI Energy Code provisions for envelope design and construction are covered and directly related to building science issues. \n(AIA and BPI credits available)  \nFor more information pleast contact Kathy Tyler Arthur at Kathleen.Arthur@csgrp.com.

SUMMARY:The New Rijksmuseum
DESCRIPTION:Jane Pickens Theater 49 Touro Street\, Newport\, RI 02840 \n{{museum{{If you’ve visited Amsterdam\, you’ve probably been to the Rijksmuseum\, one of the world’s preeminent art museums – home to masterpieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer – itself a vast\, magnificent structure\, built in 1895 by architect Pierre Cuypers. The renovation of the museum (it reopened this past April) went on for 10 long\, expensive years\, so it is fitting that a documentary on this torturous (and often\, inadvertently hilarious) process should turn into not one but two feature-length movies: Spanish architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz have designed an ingenious new entryway\, but the Dutch Cyclists Union won’t tolerate reduced access for the 13\,000 bicyclists who ride through the passageway daily. The museum’s magisterial director\, Ronald de Leeuw\, and his successor\, the younger\, scrappier Wim Pijbes\, battle with curators\, politicians\, designers\, city bureaucrats\, and the public as the price of construction soars to $500 million. It’s a messy\, complicated story with fortunately\,  a glorious ending. \nThis is a film experience in two parts with an intermission. Plan ahead as each part lasts just under two hours. \nClick here to purchase tickets.

SUMMARY:Providence Preservation Society Symposium/ Not Always Easy: Building the New Urban Experience
DESCRIPTION:{{pps-symposium}} \nThursday\, November 6\, 2014 to Saturday\, November 8\, 2014 \nIndustrial Trust Building\, 111 Westminster Street\, Providence\, RI 02903 \nRegister here. \nDowntown Providence is at a crossroads. The last 40 years has brought significant investment into this rich historic city: major infrastructure projects have literally shifted the city’s built environment along with restoration and revitalization of its buildings\, and new construction has created energy and engagement in the downtown core. \nThe city has been bold—in moving train tracks\, rivers and highways\, rejuvenating historic properties and promoting new construction. Yet challenges and questions remain in navigating the dynamic terrain on the way to becoming the next great American city. \nNot Always Easy: Building the New Urban Experience will tackle these questions and stimulate an important dialogue to move our city forward. By looking at government’s role in development\, the importance of open space to economic development\, and the necessity of a vibrant and diverse transit system to the health of a city\, PPS will spark substantive and engaging conversations in this yearlong series.
