SUMMARY:WEBINAR: One-and-Two Family Dwelling Energy Code
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by CLEAResult \nZoom Registration \nCourse Description: A healthy home is a dry\, clean\, safe\, ventilated\, maintained\, and thermally controlled environment. On average people spend at least 50 percent of their day inside their homes. Unhealthy housing puts residents at risk of health issues such as asthma and other chronic diseases. Due to the age of the housing stock in Rhode Island\, residents are at greater risk of health issues associated with building design and housing conditions. \nChapter 11 of the International Residential Code covers energy efficiency\, but the requirements of this chapter can also have significant building science implications. RI will be adopting the 2024 IECC next year and understanding how these requirements affect the building science will be critical in designing and delivering safe\, healthy and energy efficient homes. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDurability – airtightness\, thermal resistance and vapor control all work together to mitigate moisture and condensation risk.\nHealthy Indoor Air Quality – airtightness combined with mechanical ventilation deliver superior air quality.\nComfort – thermal resistance produces consistent interior surface temperatures to ensure comfort.\nEnergy Efficiency – modulating these control layers properly will deliver a building that consumes less energy for space conditioning.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Brown University Lindemann Performing Arts Center Virtual Tour
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by CLEAResult \nZoom Registration \nCourse Description:  This interactive virtual tour\, sponsored by Rhode Island Energy\, hosted by CLEAResult\, and presented by Stephen Turner Inc.\, will feature the newly constructed Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University located in Providence\, Rhode Island. This six-story\, 101\,000 sf major performance space serves as a hub for music\, dance\, theater\, and multimedia arts on the University’s campus. This virtual tour will highlight the main performance hall and smaller performance and rehearsal hall spaces\, as well as the high-performance building features. The project was built to meet the requirements of the State Energy Code (SBC-8-2013). Using the performance compliance path\, the baseline building\, and proposed building energy modeling results were compared to project an estimated annual energy savings\, which will be a focus of the virtual tour \nThe training will cover how the required energy code taken together with the mechanical code benefit public health safety and welfare in commercial buildings. These standards help to ensure safe air quality for occupants. Visual acuity and acoustics are critical\, and thermal comfort and ventilation for acceptable indoor air quality must accommodate sudden and wide changes in occupancy. The systems controls to meet these needs are addressed in the virtual tour. \n  \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nLearn about the current commercial code versions\, energy code background and energy code compliance pathways.\nWe will discuss how the building was built to meet the requirements of the State Energy Code (SBC-8-2013)\, which references the 2012 version of the International Energy Conservation Code (2012 IECC) with RI Amendments – the code in effect at the time of permitting.\nDuring the virtual tour we will view the energy efficiency measures that were incorporated into the project design such as the HVAC equipment\, lighting and lighting controls systems\, and the high-performance building envelope.\noverview of the Rhode Island Energy Code Technical Support Initiative and Free Energy Code Technical Support will be given.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Performance Based Design in Egress
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by Telgian Engineering & Consulting\, LLC  \nZoom Registration \nCourse Description:  Performance-based design in egress is especially applicable in building renovation\, addition\, and adaptive reuse where there may not be adequate egress. This course covers how egress models can be used to meet the required level of egress through a performance-based option. \nTechnical content covers facility egress and performance-based approaches that can be utilized to provide adequate egress during fire and other types of emergencies when the prescriptive requirements are either impractical or impossible. In performance-based egress approaches\, it is necessary to quantify the level of protection intended by the prescriptive code requirements for egress and then compare the proposed arrangement to a code-compliant arrangement to determine if the minimum code-mandated level of protection can be achieved. Fire modeling and egress modeling is used to determine how long a facility can maintain a tenable environment during a worst case scenario fire and compare it to the required safe egress time to understand realistically if an existing or proposed egress arrangement meets the minimum level of protection intended by the fire and building codes for emergency egress. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand the difference between performance-based design and prescriptive design requirements per the building and fire codes.\nUnderstand how to determine the necessary criteria for performance-based design options.\nIdentify the steps to a performance-based design approach.\nIdentify the roles and responsibilities of design professionals\, owners\, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in the development\, approval\, and acceptance process for performance-based design approaches.\nIdentify and understand the fire and building code language that permits the use of performance-based design and defines the minimum criteria for acceptance.\nUnderstand and identify scenarios in building design where performance-based design approaches may be appropriate.\nUnderstand how computer-based egress models and fire dynamic simulation models may be used to develop performance-based design approaches for egress.
