SUMMARY:WEBINAR: The Neurobiology of Biophilia & Spatial Cognition
DESCRIPTION:1 LU|HSW\, LEED (GBCI) and IDCEC \nThis week’s THURSDAY webinar is presented by Sky Factory \nCourse Description:\nThis course explores the neurobiology behind Biophilia’s most healing attribute: a visual connection to nature\, which also happens to be the feature with the most robust peer-reviewed research backing its therapeutic qualities. We learn about the connection between the immune system and sensory processing\, as well as how environmental features precipitate a neural chemistry that modulates our attraction/aversion to the built environment. The course unveils the healing potential of indoor sky illusions and how cognitive mechanisms map out our body’s location in relation to our immediate surroundings\, as well as to perceived connections to nature. This understanding of how distinct areas of the brain assemble our embodied sense of place provide valuable insights in the design of enclosed interiors for human wellness. \nLearning Objectives:\nAt the end of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain our physiology’s waking rest-activity cycle and how our surroundings help our psychophysiology recharge throughout the day.\nList the environmental patterns that trigger somatic markers––physiological memories that well up as emotions\, which generate a powerful sense of place.\nExplain the role distinct cortical regions play in locating our body in relation to our surroundings.\nDefine the neural pathways that trigger the release of endorphins when key environmental features are perceived\, as well as their role in human wellness.\nDiscuss the implications of hemispheric dominance in visual processing and how the type of attention we pay alters our experience of our surroundings.\nDescribe the role that place cells\, natural environments\, and memories all play in evoking a sense of place\, and how biophilic illusions enhance enclosed interiors.\n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Changing Architecture As We Know It: Step One
DESCRIPTION:1 LU \nZoom Registration required \nThis week’s webinar is presented by KITE Architects \nCourse Description:  What do you do when there’s not enough work to go around? Many offices struggled to stay busy during 2020 when the pandemic caused a decrease in work. KITE’s group research initiative began to keep our office working on meaningful assignments and to ensure the staff stay connected while working remotely. This aligned with KITE’s pre-pandemic interest in building our knowledge about human-centered design and how it can change architecture as we know it. Together we investigated specific design strategies associated with cognitive behavior to create space that supports our well-being and produced a robust set of illustrated white papers. This presentation will provide attendees with an overview of new ways to structure projects\, and an introduction to human-centered design. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn how investing in knowledge can provide meaningful investment of time during a decrease in a firm’s workload.\nExplore how aspects of Distributed Agile Teams can inform a different way to structure projects.\nTechniques to improve office connectivity and engagement through research projects.\nUnderstand human-centered design as a new\, science-based way of looking at architecture.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Rhode Island Stretch Code Training
DESCRIPTION:1.0 LU |HSW \nZoom Registration required \nThis week’s webinar is presented by CLEAResult \nCourse Description:\nRhode Island adopted a stretch code in 2017 with the desired outcomes of promoting energy-efficient homes\, assisting with construction of net zero energy homes\, expanding the installation of renewable energy systems and constructing healthy homes. We will learn that the stretch code is a locally mandated code or alternative compliance path that is more aggressive than base code\, resulting in buildings that achieve higher energy savings. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn how stretch code provisions are designed to integrate with existing national model energy codes for residential and commercial construction\, such as the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and the American Society of Heating\, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 90.1.\nWhen base codes are not keeping up with advances in technology and design practices\, stretch codes provide an opportunity to train the building and development communities in advanced practices before the underlying energy code is improved and help accelerate market acceptance and adoption of more stringent energy efficiency codes in the future.\nThis session will review Rhode Island stretch codes and other compliant pathways. http://www.energy.ri.gov/policies-programs/lead-by-example/rhode-island-stretch-codes.php\nLearn how to utilize Rhode Island incentive options to meet this compliance alternative. Stretch codes can work in tandem with utility incentive programs. In many cases\, utility energy efficiency programs\, incentives and jurisdictional stretch code programs can be aligned\n\n

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Weatherization: Insulation and Building Science
DESCRIPTION:1.0 LU | HSW \nPresented by CLEAResult \nZoom Registration required \nCourse Description: \nThis course will instruct on how to make a home more efficient for all seasons. Learning the basics of observing what is needed for a home to be energy-efficient and safe for occupants throughout all seasons. The U.S. Department of Energy released the results of the National Evaluation of the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). The result from these studies provides the success of its endeavors. Energy efficiency is a primary focus of Weatherization and the evaluations showed that single-family households saved an average of over $200 on energy bills annually. Yet\, the most inspiring benefits of the program had nothing do with energy at all. It is a proven fact that the “non-energy” benefits associated with weatherization and retrofit activities are huge! The health benefits were some of the most impressive results to come out of the evaluations. According to these peer-reviewed findings\, participants in the Weatherization program can reduce the need for emergency room visits and other health-related costs\, saving families thousands in non-energy related benefits. \nLearning Objectives \n\nThe course will begin with insulation basics and then extend to all areas of making a home more energy efficient which will not only help the homeowners energy consumption but will also benefit their health\, welfare\, and the environment.\nFundamentals of Building Science\, Insulation and Energy Consumption: Heat Transfer 1. Conduction 2. Convection 3. Radiation\nWhat is infiltration and why is it important: Air Infiltration & Air Sealing\, Air Quality\, Introducing statistical figures on lack of insulation and moisture.\nNew Homes vs. Existing Homes: Understanding Construction Basics\, vented vs. Unvented Attics\, HVAC\, how “green” is your home and green misconceptions D. Tax Rebates and Government Programs\, National Grid incentives and rebates.\nGreen Building Programs & Differences:  National Green Building Standard\, LEED 3. Energy Star\, NARGreen
