SUMMARY:HCD Webinar: Middle Housing/Growing Neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:Presented by AIA Housing and Development \nRegister \nAcross the country\, zoning and building code reforms are reintroducing denser forms of housing into neighborhoods. Some middle housing infill types\, such as ADUs\, are well known\, but small-scale multiplexes\, or stacked flats\, have greater potential to rejuvenate neighborhoods\, unlock less expensive housing options\, counter the displacement of vulnerable residents\, and lower carbon footprints per capita. Despite their promise\, stacked flat middle housing is more likely to face stiff headwinds from neighbors\, complications with zoning and building code\, and difficulties with financing. \nThe seminar will feature Alex Gauzza\, AIA LEED AP of ISA and Bryan Alcorn\, AIA of David Baker Architects\, discussing how stacked flat middle housing can be a template for integrating new housing opportunities in existing neighborhoods\, at a more efficient scale for development. Stacked flats present opportunities to unlock new housing supply in neighborhoods that have not seen new investment or on sites that would otherwise be overlooked by large multifamily developers due to size or difficulty. The seminar will highlight creative vertical circulation that is often necessary\, such as single stair code reform and multi-story units to achieve viability. \nLearning Objectives\n1. Learn about air infiltration\, air sealing\, and air quality by reviewing statistical figures on lack of insulation and moisture.\nNew Homes Existing Homes. Learn about construction basics\, vented vs. unvented attics\, HVAC systems and green misconceptions.\nA review of how Rhode Island Energy’s technical support\, rebates and energy incentives will be discussed along with how they can assist with achieving improvements.\n\nHSW Justification\nThe U.S. Department of Energy released the results of the National Evaluation of the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). The result of these studies provides the success of its endeavors. Energy efficiency is a primary focus of Weatherization\, and the evaluations showed that single-family households saved an average of over $200 on energy bills annually. Yet\, the most inspiring benefits of the program had nothing to do with energy at all. It’s a proven fact that the “non-energy” benefits associated with weatherization and retrofit activities are huge! The health benefits were some of the most impressive results to come out of the evaluations. According to these peer-reviewed findings\, participants in the Weatherization program can reduce the need for emergency room visits and other health-related costs\, saving families thousands in non-energy related benefits. \n  \nRICode R24-105

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Marvin \nRegister \nCourse Description\nThis case study features the restoration and repurposing of an 1850’s mill into a modern apartment complex\, spurring economic growth and revitalization within the greater Prattville\, AL\, community.  With seven historic brick structures within the site\, the design team had to navigate multiple layers of requirements\, from design to financing to floodplain mitigation to National Park Service approvals.  The restoration brought a balance of old\, new\, refurbished and original elements through careful consideration of how best to reveal the original buildings while also illustrating its evolution.  The fenestration solutions for the project demonstrate the planning\, research\, design\, execution\, and deciding factors between repairing or replacing windows. \nLearning Objectives\n\nDocument the initial planning\, research and investigation that is required to restore and repurpose an 1850s mill into a modern apartment complex that maximizes natural light and views and meets health and life safety requirements\nAssess design characteristics and National Park Service requirements to preserve historic integrity of the site\nDescribe the mix of fenestration solutions and how they met design\, daylighting and energy efficiency needs.\nExplain the economic and environmental impact of historic preservation.\nCompare window replacement and repair challenges and considerations\, especially for historic tax credit projects.\n\nCredits: 1 LU / HSW
