SUMMARY:Historic Building Walking Tour along Westminster
DESCRIPTION:Come take a walking tour with us and learn about the development of the street and buildings on Westminster to learn about historic and modern building systems in this city. Erik of Structures Workshop will introduce the evolution of Providence’s streetscape\, from late 19th century 5+/- story buildings (ie first building with elevator) to early “skyscrapers” (the first steel building in Providence) to later 20th century modern and post-modern buildings. We will determine which buildings are cast iron\, which are concrete encased steel\, and which are terra cotta facades We will see Art Deco next to Art Nuevo and discuss ides for the future of the city (Superman Building / Arcade / Etc) and walk by current transformations happening at the Old Projo and Kresge Buildings\, as well as changes to Laptham / 270-290 Westminster and the Providence Library and many others. We start just east of the river and work west\, first we will witness the early 20th century Federalist style makeover of Victorian Providence prior to touring downtown along Westminster. We will also see the height of the water elevation of historic flood events to remind us of the importance of the hurricane barrier. \nPlease meet us at the start at the 150ft monument/ WWI Memorial east of the river at 4:30pm\, should be a fun 1.5 hours. At the end\, please join some of us for a happy hour drink at the Malted Barley at 6pm. \nLEARN MORE > \nThis event is organized by the Structural Engineers Association of Rhode Island.

SUMMARY:A Collaborative Approach to Fall Prevention by Design
DESCRIPTION:The Ruane Friar Development Center (RFDC) built by Dimeo Construction Company and designed by Perkins Eastman is a transformational project for Providence College.  The project won the AIA-RI 2018 Merit Award in the Educational/Intuitional category. \nThe new center blends a state-of-the-art training facility for the men’s basketball team with a branding element focused on recruiting. Each space and graphic is purposed to support the students physical and social needs as well as being a beacon for young prospects deciding where to take the next step out of high school. \n{{providence-college-friar-42}} \nWhen: May 21\, 20195:30pm Networking / 6:00pm Presentation / Tour Follows     \n1 LU|HSW \nProvider: Dimeo Construction Company \nSpeaker: Bob Kunz\, Corporate Safety Director\, Scott Eaton\, Project Manager\, Erik Sanford\, Director of VDC/BIM \nToo often\, fall protection comes at the expense of design intent\, but this need not be the case. During the session\, we will review the newly codified OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart D standard and VDC tools for evaluating fall protection systems planned (or existing) for roofs.  Using the newly completed Providence College Friar Development Center project as a model\, Dimeo Construction developed a decision making flow chart developed for this new OSHA standard. Through discussions between owner\, architect\, and contractor\, BIM tools and 2-dimensional drawings were used to form the foundation for a project based constructability review and implementation of improvements\, while maintaining design integrity and aesthetics.  This collaborative presentation will reflect upon the importance of the new standards and their real-life application. Participants will leave the presentation with knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart D and learn how effective collaboration can lead to prevention by design. \nA tour will be provided after the presentation. Please RSVP by sending an email to Lori Corsi at LCorsi@dimeo.com \nLOCATION:Providence CollegeLocated behind the Field House at 74 Sandringham Rd. Enter at the front of the Friar Development Center\, and someone will be present to direct you to the presentation.
