SUMMARY:Doors Open RI - Open House at Barnaby Castle
DESCRIPTION:With its ornate detailing\, extravagant roofline and dark past\, Barnaby’s Castle is a hallmark of Victorian design\, accompanied by a no less extravagant Victorian tragedy.  The Providence home\, designed by Stone\, Carpenter & Wilson (built between 1875-1885) lay deteriorating for a number of years\, but thanks to the commitment of its new owner and residents\, the building is now in the process of restoration. \nJoin Doors Open Rhode Island at our Barnaby Castle Open House for the rare opportunity to experience the inside of this fanciful castle yourself.  \nSee the interior detailing\, Tiffany windows and intricate woodwork of the lower floors. Learn the story of the building and be introduced to the cast of characters who made this home the talk of 19th century Providence. Meet Mr. and Mrs. Barnaby\, their friends and lovers\, as well as Mrs. Barnaby’s doctor and accused murderer\, Thomas Thatcher Graves. \nMrs. Barnaby met her unfortunate demise through drinking from a bottle of poisoned whisky. If you likewise enjoy the taste of [unpoisoned] whisky\, you’re in luck! We’re pleased to be partnering with Bottles Fine Wine who will be providing a tasting of a few of their favorite whiskeys. What’s not to like?! \n299 Broadway St.Providence\, RI 02903 \nCOST:$15 in advance $20 at the door \nhttp://us13.campaign-archive2.com/?u=adfee1905e7b6f818ce7ac97c&id=cade8843a0 \n

Enjoy networking\, refreshments and tour the Tile Shop’s Showroom. We will be giving away an iPad along with other great prizes! \nThe expansive Baby Boomer generation is aging\, which signals the increasing need for homes\, services and products that cater to their lifestyle. The majority of this population would prefer to age in place rather than relocating to a nursing home or assisted living facility\, so there is an increasing and pertinent need to remodel the existing housing stock or build new residences that incorporate universal design to minimize injury and ease everyday tasks. This is actually important for all age groups\, because challenges in areas such as stamina\, balance and dexterity can affect anyone and increase our need for support to move around the home and to operate bathroom fixtures. Designing a bathroom with universal design principles affords privacy\, comfort\, safety and independence in an aesthetically pleasing environment. \nFour Learning Objectives:• Introduce the Seven Principles of Universal Design.• Understand the concept of “aging in place” and why the need for Universal Designis growing.• Examine how design professionals are integrating Universal Design into their practice.• Discuss recommendations for incorporating Universal Design into the bathroom. This event is open to ASID members & non-members. Tickets are free for ASID members and $10 for non-members. \nRegister here. \nCEU credit for ASID/IDCEC\, AIA\, & NKBAASID/IDCEC Course: CC-103779AIA Course: ROHLUD2013.Credits: 0.1

SUMMARY:DesignxRI Clambake
DESCRIPTION:Aurora\, 276 Westminster St.\, Providence \nClambake is a gathering for designers\, creatives\, and those who like design and want to learn more. It highlights the vast and amazing design talent in RI. We get together\, network\, and hear about some of the cool design work that is happening here. Two presenters from two different design disciplines present each month. Presentations are generally 15 minutes followed by Q&A. \nPresenters: \nMegan Billings\, Kineteks \nMegan Billings designs novel\, bio-hybrid prototype medical devices and the automated/robotic equipment used to build them. She works with biologists\, surgeons\, and chemists to bring cell-housing implants into the lab and the clinic. \nMegan grew up in her parents’ Jamestown\, RI boat yard where she picked up a love of tools and woodworking from her mother\, a classic wooden boat builder\, and her father\, a captain and fiberglass boat developer. She graduated from RISD with a BFA in Illustration as well as an affinity for computer modeling\, rendering\, and CAD CAM. \nAfter a brief stint as a CNC technician in the marine industry\, Megan joined Kineteks in Warwick\, RI\, in 2006. Now as the senior design engineer\, Megan and her small team at Kineteks take medical device projects all the way from concept development through clinical trial production.   \nSeth Wiseman\, ConForm Lab \nFascinated with systems and systems thinking\, Seth has worked in a variety of capacities within the building and design industry over the course of his career. Working and designing at various scales\, Seth seeks to uncover a unique logic for each project. Moving through the design process\, Seth leverages and refines this logic to inform design decision-making\, detailing\, and development. This process\, greatly steered through client input\, creates a framework that informs and reinforces the design process. \nSeth studied Building Science and Industrial Design at Appalachian State University and minored in Sustainable Development. After working in the architectural industry in NYC\, Seth completed a MArch degree at Rhode Island School of Design. In addition to founding ConForm Lab\, a design consulting business\, with Walter Zesk\, Seth runs Designwise LLC\, a traditional architectural practice. \nRegister here. \n
