This 186\,000-gsf\, six-story facility filled with open\, natural lit spaces\, which were the centerpiece of the buildings design to enhance collaboration. It also features a beautiful spiral staircase that connects between floors. The project was designed and built to comply with the requirements of LEED 2009 for New Construction and Major Renovation and has recently achieved LEED Silver certification. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn about the current commercial code versions\, energy code background and energy code compliance pathways.\nWe will discuss how the building was built to meet the requirements of the State Energy Code (SBC-8-2013)\, which references the 2012 version of the International Energy Conservation Code (2012 IECC) with RI Amendments – the code in effect at the time of permitting.\nDuring the virtual tour we will view the: HVAC equipment\, air distribution systems and other energy efficient measures such as lighting and exterior systems.\nA summary of how technical support and the code enhancement incentive helped in establishing a higher level of compliance.

DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by Apex Lighting + Building Solutions \nZoom Registration \nCourse Description: This course provides a detailed description of design solutions using new technology\, high performance fabrics in interior shading. The focus of the presentation is to provide clarification based on science that assist the specifier in choosing the best solutions for combining occupant wellness with design intent. This presentation outlines the technical as well as aesthetic properties of specialized technical fabric versus standard fabrics for light and heat control. \nLearning Objectives:      \n\nDevelop design strategies to connect building occupants to the outdoors through nature views while effectively controlling heat and glare thus maximizing occupant productivity.\nUnderstand how user discomfort from glare is a product of the total light transmission\, the combination of direct and diffused light\, entering through the window.\nIdentify opportunities to control solar heat gain thereby promoting the ability to “right-size” HVAC equipment in the building design to maintain a comfortable air temperature while promoting the physical wellbeing of occupants.\nAddress building occupant safety through inhalation exposure by detailing interior environmental concerns such as neural levels of VOCs\, antimicrobial properties\, LEED v4 guidelines and manufacturer material disclosure in fabric shade design solutions.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Rethinking Light\, Design & Human Experience in a Solid State World of LEDs
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW (AIA & IDCEC) \nPresented by BostonLightSource \nZoom Registration \nCourse description:  Light plays a critical role in the spaces we construct and for the people who inhabit them. As the built environment transforms from the assembly of inanimate materials crafted by a series of independent trade artisans to a world of intelligent\, interconnected solid state electronic devices\, new methodology is the imperative. \nThe advancement of LED technology has disrupted the electric lighting industry. As the rate of innovation continues\, opportunities rise to leverage LED sources in ways that were never possible with legacy sources. Unconventional thinking about light as a naturally occurring phenomenon allows for greater design freedom and reduced environmental impacts. This course explains basic and advanced optical theories of how natural and electric light can be used together to their maximum potential\, redefining many of the elements of design to enhance the human experience and improve infrastructure and connectivity. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExplore the basics of advanced architectural anidolic daylighting strategies and determine how they can be deployed with LEDs in solid state lighting technologies.\nAnalyze human visual interpretation of light and color and how that affects perception in the built environment; distinguish different types of light spectrum control and discuss the color tuning abilities of tunable white fixtures to improve the comfort and well-being of people in the noted environment.\nIdentify application best practices for minimal energy usage in commercial and institutional settings using specific examples that focus on energy efficiency and sustainable design values.\nRecognize the role of a lighting system as the backbone infrastructure in the next generation of buildings that synthesizes all elements of lighting design – industrial\, optical\, electrical\, thermal and mechanical.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: New Principles in Residential Design Using Opening Glass Walls
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by NanaWall \nZoom Registration \nCourse Description: People have been spending more time at home and doing activities that were commonly done elsewhere such as working\, school learning\, etc. Post-pandemic\, it appears that people will continue to opt to work or learn at home\, at least on a part-time (hybrid) basis if not full-time. Residential buildings need to respond to new reality of flexibility to provide openness when appropriate but separation when needed – both for functioning and for health. The issues are true for both new building design and construction as well as for the renovation of existing buildings. Large operable glass walls provide both linear and spatial options to open or isolate spaces. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nExplain the welfare aspects of design and product selection that enable equitable access.\nAssess the safety aspects of incorporating product selections that protect buildings and people from harm and damage.\nIdentify and recognize the significance of ongoing health concerns related to residential design and product selection.\nDetermine ways to incorporate the design principles into single family building projects.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: RI Commercial Energy Code Updates
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by CLEAResult \nZoom Registration \nCourse Description: This training will provide an overview of the energy code section of the Building Safety Act and changes in the Rhode Island Energy Code. The training will also discuss how the RISBC-8 Energy Code for commercial new construction\, renovations\, and repairs will be affected by the recent and upcoming changes to the national model code\, International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). This will cover critical information regarding significant code changes\, new provisions\, and related best practices and how the required code updates – particularly the energy code updates taken together with the mechanical code updates – are expected to benefit public health safety and welfare in commercial buildings. Some examples of performance issues that affect comfort are temperature extremes\, humidity extremes\, excessive airspeed from ventilation\, unpleasant odors\, and noise. These standards help to ensure safe air quality for occupants. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nLearn about the energy code section of the Building Safety Act and changes to the Rhode Island Energy Code that will be required.\nExamine the impact of the upcoming code updates to the energy code compliance procedures.\nLearn about the upcoming energy code requirements for permit applications\, permit document sets\, and energy inspections.\nThe training will cover how the required code updates – particularly the energy code updates taken together with the mechanical code updates – are expected to benefit public health safety and welfare in commercial buildings.\nAn overview of the Rhode Island Energy Code Technical Support Initiative and Free Energy Code Technical Support will be discussed.
