SUMMARY:Overcoming the Obstacles that Face Economically-Challenged Downtown Mixed-Use Projects
DESCRIPTION:Location: 1 Capitol Hill\, Providence (DOA)\, Conference Room 2B \nThe economic and community impacts of downtown mixed-use projects can be transformative and create lasting change. This session will explore which metrics to measure and how to show the value of a project.  Attendees will learn unique strategies to leverage that value into community support and funding sources\, and also about potential barriers and ways to overcome them.  \nSpeaker: Robert Stevens\, P.E.\, is the founder and president of Stevens & Associates\, P.C. and principal for M&S Development. Bob has over 25 years of experience as a professional engineer designing projects\, as well as\, planning\, urban design\, public bond campaigns and project finance & development.  S&A is a verified Veteran-Owned Small Business (VSOB) with the Department of Veterans Affairs located in downtown Brattleboro\, Vermont offering Architecture\, Landscape Architecture\, Civil and Structural Engineering services. \nAs a principal for M&S Development\, Bob directs a team of professionals to organize and guide business leaders\, institutions\, and people to redevelop and revitalize main streets & downtowns.  His knowledge of new markets tax credits\, historical tax credits\, grants\, equity and debt enable him to identify project needs and develop sound solutions.  Bob is an accredited professional in both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Congress for New Urbanism (CNU).  He’s well-versed in sustainable design\, traditional design and historic preservation\, and has presented at numerous conferences including Traditional Building\, Vermont Development Conference and Historic preservation conferences.  Bob’s work and community support has been recognized with numerous awards including the Vermont Downtown Volunteer of the Year and the Southern Vermont Leadership Award for Economic Excellence. \nThis program is part of the 2019 Statewide Planning Speaker Series organized by the Rhode Island Department of Administration.

Besides his service to the AIA\, Elefante is a nationally recognized expert on sustainability practices\, particularly through environmental\, social\, and historic preservation frameworks. As an architect\, he has worked on projects such as the award-winning renovation of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington\, DC. DESCRIPTION:Come tour the rehab renovation and new construction happening along Westminster Street in the Downcity neighborhood of Providence. \nLocation: 290 Westminster Street\, Providence\, RI \nThis construction tour exhibits the rehab renovation and new construction of the Lapham\, Wit\, and Trayne buildings in the downtown historic district. Renovations to the historic Lapham Building\, Wit Building\, and Trayne Building will add 52 apartments to Westminster Lofts\, 6 ground-floor restaurant/retail spaces totaling 11\,771 square feet\, and 8\,956 square feet of office space to the second floor of the combined Lapham and Wit Buildings. \nAXP Credit: Aspiring Architects can document up to 40 hours in “Construction & Evaluation” for site-visits with a mentor.
