SUMMARY:AIAri Summer Event: Composites in Architecture
DESCRIPTION: {{composites}} \nPlease join us for a day-long event exploring the possibilities of composite materials in Architecture. \nAGENDA  9:00-9:30AM: Coffee & Registration9:30-10AM: Welcoming Remarks \n10:00-10:50AM: Dirk Kramers \nSince 1976\, Dirk has developed and implemented cutting edge structures for America’s Cup campaigns; most recently as Chief Engineer for Oracle Team USA’s victorious defense (2013) and as Head of Engineering for Land Rover BAR’s challenge (2017).  Dirk has won the America’s Cup an impressive 6 times. Dirk’s perspective on high performance structures offers a “sneak peak” of the possibilities for architectural applications.  As designed shapes become more complicated\, advanced composites will enable those designs to become reality. \n10:55-11:55AM: Introduction to Composites Panel Discussion: \nLearn the basics and understand the data associated with using composites.                \nSpeakers: \nEric Goetz\, Chief Innovation Officer\, Goetz Composites \nJP Mouligne\, Gurit USA \nNate Fash\, AIA\, Assistant Professor of Architecture\, Roger Williams University \nModerator: Bob Lacovara\, Director of Education\, IYRS School of Technology & Trades \n11:55-12:25PM: Lunch Break \n12:30-1:30PM: Case Study: The SURE HOUSE \nSpeaker: John Nastasi   \n{{sure2{{The SURE HOUSE started with a simple question: how can we design a home which both reduces its energy use and adapts to the realities of a changing\, more extreme climate. Our answer emerged as a new direction in storm resilient coastal housing. We merged the inherently efficient indoor/outdoor rooms and open floor plan of the quintessential 60’s style modern beach cottage with state of the art building science\, the latest renewable energy technologies\, and fiber-composite materials repurposed from the boat building industry. The result is a building armored against extreme weather that uses 90% less energy than its conventional cousins\, powers itself through clean solar energy\, and in the aftermath of a storm becomes a hub for emergency power to the neighborhood… all of this packaged as a comfortable\, beautiful beach house. \n1:30-1:50PM: Perspective from an Architect \n1:50-2PM: Closing remarks 2:00-4:45PM: Tour of Symmetrix Composite Tooling – and Goetz Composites \n5PM: Cocktail Hour/LobsterBoil RWU Sailing Center \n6 AIA HSW LU \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Downtown Providence Living Offers Behind-the- Scenes View of Apartments in the Heart of the City
DESCRIPTION:11 Properties to be Featured Including Newly Opened Rehabilitation Projects Tour 11 downtown apartment buildings\, all in one afternoon! On Saturday\, June 10th from 11 AM to 5 PM\, The Providence Foundation and Providence Downtown Improvement District (DID) will host a Downtown Providence Living Tour to give the public an insider’s perspective on residential rental options in the neighborhood. This year\, the tour will feature 95 Lofts\, 225 Weybosset\, Arcade Providence\, Avalon at Center Place\, G Reserve\, Providence G\, Regency Plaza\, the Sampalis Building\, the Telephone Building\, and Westminster Lofts’ Peerless and Wilkinson buildings. All guests must start at the registration center\, AS220\, 115 Westminster Street\, where they will pick up tour programs featuring maps and suggested itineraries. From there\, guests are encouraged to walk or bike the self-guided route at their own pace\, but free shuttle service and pedicab rides will also be provided. The organizers have collaborated on four previous tours\, most recently in fall 2015. They typically attract a broad mix of people who are interested in moving downtown and others who simply want to experience the neighborhood’s transformation up close. The tour takes place rain or shine\, and tickets can be purchased in advance for $7 at downtownprovidence.com or on-site at AS220 during the tour for $10. Proceeds will benefit the Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy’s restoration of the Soldiers & Sailors Monument in Kennedy Plaza. The tour celebrates Downtown Providence’s significant residential growth and popularity among young professionals and empty nesters. According to the most recent U.S. Census\, the downtown population grew 70.6% from 2000 to 2010\, increasing from 2\,678 to 4\,569 residents. Since 2010\, several new downtown properties have opened\, adding more than 500 rental units to the downtown market: Arcade Providence (48 units)\, Providence G (55 units)\, George C. Arnold building (3 units)\, Merchants Bank building (10 units)\, Westminster Lofts’ Kinsley building (44 units)\, the second building at The Promenade (196 units)\, G Reserve (60 units)\, 32 Custom House (10 units)\, 95 Lofts (57 units)\, 225 Weybosset (12 units)\, and the Sampalis Building (15 units). Several other residential conversion and development projects are currently underway. According to Michael DeGrandpre\, vice president of the Downtown Neighborhood Association\, “The Downtown Providence Living Tour is a fantastic opportunity for people to get to know our beautiful city all over again\, or for the first time.  Many residents from Rhode Island remember Downtown Providence from another era\, but this tour exemplifies what an incredible place the area has become for residents.  So many of our buildings have been exquisitely preserved on the outside\, yet modernized with every convenience on the inside.  We look forward to sharing the wonderful assets of downtown with neighbors from near and far who are interested in seeing more of our beautiful living spaces.” The Downtown Providence Living Tour is sponsored by The Providence Foundation\, the Providence Downtown Improvement District\, and participating properties\, with additional support from ASH NYC\, CORT Furniture\, Craftland\, The Dean Hotel\, the Downtown Neighborhood Association\, Mott & Chace\, New Harvest Coffee Roasters\, Regency Plaza\, Rosalina\, and Studio MEJA. The website\, downtownprovidence.com\, includes information about special parking event rates with validation at the Civic center Garage\, 165 Washington Street.

SUMMARY:Citizen Jane Showing at the Cable Car
DESCRIPTION:May 19\, 2017\, Cable Car Cinema\, 204 South Main Street\, Providence\, RI. \nn the 1950s and ’60s\, Jane Jacobs\, the author of the 1961 classic The Death and Life of Great American Cities\, took on seemingly indomitable city planners\, principally tyrannical master builder Robert Moses\, in a series of epic battles over historic neighborhoods such as Soho\, Greenwich Village\, and Little Italy. Working to protect beloved areas from the wrecking ball of urban renewal projects and highways that threatened to tear them apart or obliterate them completely\, she championed the role of local residents in decision-making and ultimately influenced approaches to public transit\, urban design\, and public policy. Jacob’s activism resonates loudly in our present time as grassroots movements rise up to resist power-based bullying and autocratic authority. She was not only a powerful writer but one of the most notable woman leaders in activism who spoke truth to power.  By showcasing her victories over Robert Moses\, and the cohort of urban planners in the period\, CITIZEN JANE provides us with an early activist playbook\, telling the stories of Jacobs’ victories over monolithic forces determined to destroy treasured parts of New York City – as well as many other cities. Her story – one of a citizen soldier determined to fight – becomes a veritable “how to” for organizing around a ground-up protest movement against a seemingly unmovable autocracy. The activist spirit personified by Jacobs is alive today\, as we saw at the women’s’ march when millions took to the streets – a protest movement Jacobs would surely have admired and encouraged.  Citizen Jane is produced by Robert Hammond\, co-founder of Friends of the High Line\, and Corey Reeser and Matt Tyrnauer of Altimeter Films. \nWatch the trailer here. \nFri\, 5/19: 4:00p 6:00p 8:00pSat\, 5/20: 12:00p 2:00p 4:00p 6:00p 8:00pSun\, 5/21: 12:00p 2:00p 4:00p 6:00p 8:00pMon\, 5/22: 4:30p 6:30p 8:30p \n
