DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by CLEAResult \nRegistration required \nCourse description:  In 2015 the Governor signed an Executive order to Lead by Example! Stating by doing so we will “improve public health\, protect the environment\, and enhance quality of life”. \nA new community of energy efficient homes being built to DOE’s Zero Energy Ready standards is currently under construction in Warwick RI. – We will present on the construction techniques health\, energy\, and environmental benefits. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nHow to design and build a high-quality\, cost-effective building shell for comfort\, durability\, and energy savings. Learn about: What goes on inside the walls of a well-insulated home\, techniques for effective insulation and air barriers\, and how to incorporate appropriate heating and cooling equipment.\nSeminar Topics: Participants will be able to: Identify what goes into making a home “low load”\, Understand why to build a home this way\, understand basic HVAC system sizing and duct design for low load homes and identify the difference between planned and installed systems and reasoning behind the changes.\nBuilding Science – The fundamental principles of energy and moisture transfer\, and how homes are designed and built to control them. Zero Energy Ready Homes – Basic design considerations required to achieve low energy use homes. We will talk about construction techniques that are critical to achieve high-performance buildings and provide an understanding of the certification process and the role of consultants\, standards\, and verification.\nHow these homes will meet the requirements of DOE Zero Energy Ready and the RI Residential Stretch Code.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Floating Hardwood Floors & Sustainable Solid Hardwoods\, 2 Mini Sessions
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW (.5 each) \nPresented by Stellar Floors \nRegistration required \nWe All Float On: The Advantages of Floating Hardwood Floors \nCourse description: Traditional solid hardwood floors are nailed or glued down\, and over the last 100 years\, there have been no significant technological advancements in the solid wood flooring industry. New floating methods have been developed leading to more flexible\, healthful\, and sustainable options in natural materials. This course is designed to teach participants the characteristics of floating floor assemblies that increase resilience to wear and promote adaptive reuse of flooring materials. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearning about new innovations in solid hardwood flooring and how they compared to the previous alternatives\, and positive implications moving forward.\nUnderstand how floating assemblies improve hardwood flooring performance while reducing the constant need to replace and discard floors every 5 to 20 years depending on wood species.\n\nWhole Woods: Why Solid Hardwoods are the Sustainable Solution for the Future \nCourse description:  Solid hardwood materials sequester roughly 1/2 of their weight in carbon and thereby represent a significant advantage in the construction of green buildings. Additional benefits are provided when materials are locally sourced and manufactured using wind and solar power. This course will explore the additional “carbon positive” benefits of innovative floating floor assemblies that are comprised of natural solid hardwoods. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nWeigh the costs and benefits of using solid woods in flooring applications\nDescribe the tangible sustainable benefits of using solid wood in construction\n\n

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Advanced Building Commissioning
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by CLEAResult \nRegister for this session \nCourse description:  Learn how the process of assuring that all systems and components of a building or industrial plant are designed\, installed\, tested\, operated\, and maintained according to the operational requirements of the owner or final client. A commissioning process may be applied not only to new projects but also to existing units and systems subject to expansion\, renovation\, or revamping. We will focus on the commissioning requirements found in the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and Rhode Island amendments. These standards help to ensure safe air quality for occupants. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nA general overview of the three prominent delivery methods (Design-Bid-Build\, Design-Build\, and IPD) and the role of the building commissioning agent will be outlined.\nLearn how commissioning ensures that you maximize the performance of your equipment through the “commissioning plan” and how this plan should outline the scope of work and define the processes such as testing and balancing\, sequence of operations\, documentation requirements and preliminary and final reporting.\nGain a better understanding of building commissioning by viewing actual case studies.\nWe will discuss why new building construction and large-scale renovation projects are encouraged to use the Stretch Codes to help maximize the financial incentives available from Rhode Island Energy’s Energy Efficiency Programs.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW\,  1 GBCI CE Hour \nPresented by Rockwool \nZoom registration \nCourse Description:  This session explores evolving trends in building enclosure technology\, and subsequent changes in energy efficient building design; with especial focus on the role of continuous exterior insulation (CI).The net energy savings realized in a properly insulated building are by now well understood\, and these savings are increasingly being required by stringent local building and energy codes. Current  building science research and field monitoring data will be presented\, to demonstrate how the effective R value of various insulating materials perform and change in differing regional climates\, temperature ranges\, and seasonal conditions. Strategies for designing and constructing highly insulated and cost effective wall assemblies while still minimizing thermal bridging are also discussed. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nConsider how recent changes in building and energy codes can and should influence your design strategy for producing whole building energy efficiency.\nUnderstand how proper material selection and good design for wall assemblies is critical for ensuring reliable long term energy efficient performance.\nLearn how newer cladding attachment systems are being utilized in the construction of highly insulated wall assemblies and how to apply these technologies to your projects.\n Gain a better understanding of how these systems are being installed in the field and the minimal changes to current construction practices.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Ventilation: Code Requirements & Compliance Strategies
DESCRIPTION:1 LU | HSW \nPresented by CLEAResult \nRegister for this session \nCourse description: Gases from combustion appliances\, like stoves and fireplaces\, can accumulate in a poorly ventilated home and threaten health and safety. Excessive moisture in a home can also threaten your health\, and can lead to mold growth\, ruin insulation\, and even cause structural damage. We will inform design professionals of what they need to know about HVAC and the energy code. We will delve deeply into the issue of ventilation\, system sizing\, ductwork\, and quality installation\, with a particular emphasis on health\, safety\, and energy savings. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nParticipants will learn that half of the energy used in a home goes to heating and cooling and that making smart decisions about home heating\, ventilating\, and air conditioning (HVAC) system can have a big effect on health\, comfort\, and utility bills.\nThe house working as a system and what to be aware of for healthy living. Identifying: natural\, spot\, and whole-house ventilation\, combustion appliances\, indoor moisture and moisture control\, structural air leakage.\nRI New Construction requirements: The 2019 State of Rhode Island Energy Conservation Code (RISBC-8)\, based on the 2015 IECC\, requires the air tightness of the building to be measured using a blower door at a test pressure of 50 Pa difference between the interior and exterior of the home\, and reported in writing to the appropriate building official having jurisdiction.\nElevated levels of humidity can make cooling equipment work harder\, leading to more costly energy bills.
