SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Understanding the basics of concrete and crystalline waterproofing
DESCRIPTION:AIAri Windows on Architecture\, 158 Washington Street\, Providence\, RI 02903 \nUnderstanding the basics of concrete and crystalline waterproofing:•    Composition•    Durability•    Degradation•    Dampproofing vs waterproofing•    History of•    BenefitsHow crystalline waterproofing can improve facilities image and occupant’s well-being while reducing maintenance costsHow crystalline waterproofing can contribute to LEED pointsReview completed projects where crystalline technology was used to restore historical properties\, reduce moisture transfer through concrete\, and eliminate interior air quality issues. \nPresenter:   William D. (Bill) Armitage\, Watertite Sales-Owner\, Punta Gorda\, FL. \nWatertite Sales is a master sales representative for Foxfire Enterprises\, Inc. As a master sales representative\, the company has sales representation east of the Mississippi as well as Canada. In addition to Foxfire\, Watertite represents Miracote and their cementitious overlays in the Florida market. Background \nMost of my career was spent in the roofing industry\, primarily the commercial side. I started my career as a sales trainee for a large building manufacturer right out of college. My experience in sales\, marketing\, and management gave me a great education. After 10 years with a manufacturer\, I moved on to the distribution side of the roofing business\, I decided after 5 years with a distributor\, to start my own distributor/representative company. \nI owned several companies\, gathering leadership and sales awards along the way. I had the privilege of sitting on both Carlisle\, and Firestone’s advisory councils. A chance meeting 8 years ago with George Kubala owner of Foxfire Enterprises\, Inc. changed my pathway from roofing to concrete. Foxfire produces crystalline products to densify and seal concrete. Since the majority of the concrete waterproofing market was membrane oriented\, the challenge was to get the specifier to recognize non-membrane sealers as a legitimate method of waterproofing masonry surfaces. The challenges have been great since their a few if any testing criterion for non-membrane type products\, plus we rely on word of mouth advertising. \nOfferingWhat I offer is a clear understanding of what concrete is\, why it works\, and why it fails. I discuss the alternative to membrane type waterproofing\, that of integral waterproofing. Integral waterproofing is over 70 year’s old\, used worldwide. From its early days of a sodium silicate to advances in the lithium market\, chemically treating to waterproof can be used as a standalone process or a “belt and suspender” type application. The advantages of a non-membrane forming product are enormous considering that concrete must breathe to sustain itself. \n RSVP Emma Migneault- emma.migneault@gmail.com

SUMMARY:RI Commercial Energy Code Training: URI Chemistry Building
DESCRIPTION:140 Flagg Road\, Kingston\, RI 02881 (Parking lot located on the south side of the building accessed via West Alumni Avenue) \nFree Admission \nThe University of Rhode Island New Chemistry Building is a 134\,623 square foot facility\, designed to achieve a USGBC LEED v3.0 Silver certification minimum with a predicted Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 202 kBTU/sf/yr. This anticipated energy usage compares to a regional average of existing similar building types measuring approximately 397 kBTU/sf/yr. Based on this measure\, this project is expected to use 49% less energy than comparable existing buildings\, and is projecting a savings of 20% over the minimum energy code for new buildings. Some of the energy efficiency measures that were incorporated into this building design to help achieve this predicted EUI include: high performance building enclosure with improved thermal envelope and high efficiency glazing\, high efficiency centrifugal chillers\, occupancy setback\, automatic lighting controls\, reduced interior lighting power densities\, VAV and chilled beams for lab & office spaces\, high efficiency condensing boilers\, demand control ventilation\, and energy recovery. The building connects to the existing campus steam plant. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:My vision for the 6-10 Connector is... Save the Date: 6-10 Connector Public Workshop on August 30
DESCRIPTION:Asa Messer School (1655 Westminster Street). \nThe City of Providence is launching a public process to bring community members and decision-makers together to craft a design proposal for the 6-10 Connector\, a portion of state highway that runs through numerous Providence neighborhoods including Olneyville\, West End\, Federal Hill\, Silver Lake\, Hartford\, Valley\, and Smith Hill. The 6-10 Connector and portions of routes 6 and 10 are currently in disrepair and will soon be replaced. Over the coming months\, the City will engage the neighborhoods impacted by this project in a meaningful public process that will result in a design proposal to improve this section of infrastructure while also enhancing alternative modes of transportation\, repairing connections between the neighborhoods along the corridor\, reducing long-term maintenance costs\, alleviating traffic congestion\, and reclaiming excess highway land to create redevelopment opportunities. \nFor additional news related to the 6-10 Connector project\, connect with the City of Providence Department of Planning and Development on Twitter (@ProvPlanning) and Facebook using #610Connector.

SUMMARY:Third Annual WBNA House Tour
DESCRIPTION:WALKING TOURSaturday\, OCTOBER 1 : 10am-4pm \nIn 2014 the National Trust for Historic Preservation outlined the important role small historic buildings play in generating robust local economies in their report titled “Older\, Smaller\, Better: Measuring how the character of buildings and blocks influences urban vitality”. We wholeheartedly agree! That is why our 3rd Annual House Tour celebrates the urban vitality of the West Side of Providence by featuring cottages and courts of the historic Armory District. Sometimes our smallest houses are our sweetest\, cutest and coziest houses. They also tend to be the most efficient and green; demonstrating very concretely that urban living\, historic preservation\, and sustainability can coexist and thrive together. \nJoin us on Saturday October 1\, 2016\, from 10am-4pm for a self-guided tour of the cottages and courts of the Armory District \nEvent Website: \nhttp://www.wbna.org/house-tour-2016/ \nTo buy Tickets: \nhttp://www.wbna.org/store/2016-house-tour

SUMMARY:Russell Warren Digitization Project
DESCRIPTION:The Arcade\, Providence \n{{warren}} \nIn partnership with local historian David Harrington\, the Rhode Island Historical Society is leading a collaborative effort\, with the help of partners such as the Providence Athenaeum and Linden Place\, to assemble a comprehensive database of digitized plans\, drawings\, and other documentation detailing the life and work of esteemed local architect Russell Warren.  Working in Rhode Island in the early 19th century\, Russell Warren made pivotal contributions to Rhode Island and Massachusetts architecture.  His work spans decades and includes such iconic buildings as the Nathan Durfee House\, the Double Bank Building and the Arcade. \nThe mission of the Russell Warren Project is to make available in a single location the plans created by Russell Warren and the historical documents relating to his life that are currently spread across the region.  By digitizing these records\, we will encourage broader access to these collections and protect the original materials from repeated physical use.   RIHS hopes to close the gap between these varied collections by hosting their digitized versions and home organizations on one streamlined online catalog.  Over the course of this project\, RIHS also hopes that our efforts will encourage other members of the community to identify their pieces of Russell Warren history\, helping to draft a more complete picture of the prolific RI architect. \nFeaturing an appearance by the renowned architectRUSSELL WARREN and theUNVEILING OF HIS ARCADE DRAWINGS CASH BAR PROVIDED BYNEW HARVEST COFFEE & SPIRITS \nAdmission is free. \nRegister here.

DESCRIPTION:The Providence Preservation Society’s 2016 Providence Symposium\, Why Preserve?\, will bring together experts from across the nation as well as local stakeholders to examine why historic preservation matters to Providence and all communities. To be held at the iconic but threatened Industrial Trust Building\, the Symposium will launch a year of community-based conversations around these fundamental questions: Why do we preserve? What do we preserve? Who decides what we preserve – that is\, who are “we”? What are the costs of preservation? Who bears them?Featured in the program will be special guests whose work has had monumental impact on countless cities\, communities and historic buildings\, including: Keynote Speaker Curtis G. Viebranz\, President & CEO of Mount Vernon; Carl R. Nold\, President & CEO of Historic New England; and Dr. Max Page\, MS Design Program Director and Director of Historic Preservation Initiatives with the Department of Architecture at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, as well as author of the newly-published book\, Why Preservation Matters. \nJoin PPS to find out just what we mean when we say preservation matters!
