SUMMARY:Webinar: The AIA Housing and Community Development Knowledge Community presents\, Saving Superman: Adaptive Re-use for Providence’s Skyline
DESCRIPTION:1 LU/HSW \nZoom Registration required \nThe AIA Housing and Community Development Knowledge Community presents Saving Superman: Adaptive Re-use for Providence’s Skyline with speakers AIA-RI’s Jonathan Bell\, AIA\, and Elizabeth Debs\, AIA\, along with Liliane Wong\, AIA.  \n{{superman-building{{   \nSaving Superman is an endeavor to preserve the Industrial Trust Building\, known in Providence as the Superman Building. Placed on the National Trust’s list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in 2019\, RISD’s Department of Interior Architecture joined forces with Providence Preservation Society to explore the reuse of the Superman Building in the final semester of the MA in Adaptive Reuse Program. Equipped with data\, historical context\, opinions\, ideas\, and optimism\, seven students engaged in immersive research and met with city planners\, development consultants\, local business stakeholders\, and technical experts to design speculations for one of Providence’s—and Rhode Island’s—most urgent architectural\, economic development\, and public image issues. \nLearning Objectives:   \n\nUnderstand the significance of the National Trust for Historic Places and the local Providence Preservation Society’s “Most Endangered Places” designation\nBecome familiar with conceptual adaptive re-use strategies – including housing\, community development and urban agriculture – for the skyscraper typology\nUnderstand the innovative building technologies used in a historic 1928 skyscraper structure\nUnderstand the framework for contemporary\, historic\, and future socioeconomic context for revitalization in a mid-sized historic downtown.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Apex Lighting Solutions / Apex Integrated Building Solutions presents\, Lighting WELL: Lighting and the WELL Building Standard
DESCRIPTION:1.0 LU/HSW  \nZoom Registration required \nCourse Description: We know how to design environments that fuel our bodies\, keep us moving\, inspire our best work and facilitate a good night’s sleep. The Well Building Standard endeavors to provide an evidence-based process to validate an approach to design for environmental health and well-being. This seminar explores methods to achieve health and well-being in the Light Concept of the 2019 Well Buildings Standard version 2.0 as it pertains to both electric and daylighting sources. We spend more than 90% of our lives indoors. Studies show strong links between better views\, brighter light and better performance in office environments. The Well Light Concept promotes exposure to light and aims to create lighting environments that are optimal for visual\, mental and biological health. Discover how the Standard supports circadian stimulus\, hormone levels and the sleep-wake cycles of occupants derived through scientific and medical knowledge to promote alertness\, better performance\, and better sleep quality while potentially reducing obesity\, diabetes\, depression\, breast cancer\, sleep disorders and more. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nTranslate existing concepts of Well Building Standard into actionable practices to enhance a buildings impact on occupant health and well-being.\nApply lighting features into a project to leverage electric and daylighting evidence-based techniques for occupant comfort and productivity.\nDiscover methods of validating preconditions and optimizations of the Light Concept to achieve Well certification.\nEnable strategies for employing better lighting into environments for circadian and psychological health while reducing negative effects of insufficient spectrum\, quantity\, duration and timing of electric lighting

SUMMARY:Webinar: Pella presents\, Glazing Strategies for Sound Control.
DESCRIPTION:1 AIA/CES LU / 1 Hour HSW \nZoom Registration required \nCourse Description: As noise pollution continues to become a growing health concern\, strategies to control sound in both residential and non-residential building design have also increased in importance. This course examines the significance of sound control strategies and how they can improve the health and well-being of individuals by increasing comfort\, workplace productivity\, reducing stress\, and allowing for proper rest. The acoustic attenuation properties of fenestration products are important factors to consider when designing new buildings or remodeling existing ones. Discussions on site-specific testing\, STC and OITC ratings\, and real-world examples will leave attendees with a better understanding of how a strong sound control strategy is important for the success of a project. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn why a sound control strategy matters in project design.\nLearn basic sound properties\, how they are measured\, and basic principles for controlling unwanted noise.\nExplore glazing solutions that provide sound control.\nLearn why site-specific acoustical testing may be necessary.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Huber Engineered Woods LLC presents\, Code Recognized Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Panels Applications for Acoustic and Fire Rated Systems
DESCRIPTION:1-LU/HSW Credit \nZoom Registration required \nCourse Description: Acoustical control and fire resistance are two primary code requirements for commercial buildings. An emerging product solution that is proving successful is Magnesium Oxide (MgO) panels for wall and floor/ceiling assemblies. This course investigates specifically MgO wall and floor/ceiling applications in Type III and V construction. In this course\, you will investigate the design and construction process for MgO panels in code recognized assemblies. The course begins with a description of the material and its properties\, and its code compliance characteristics related to acoustical performance and fire resistance. Installation procedures and discussed\, and comparisons made to alternative systems such as wet-laid gypsum underlayment. \n  \nLearning Objectives: \nLearning Objectives: \nAfter completion of this course\, participants will be equipped to: \n• Identify the physical characteristics of magnesium oxide (MgO) panels in terms of their makeup and basic performance attributes for use in floor and wall assemblies and implement MgO based assemblies in multifamily/commercial projects. \n• Investigate the fire-resistance capabilities and testing standards that demonstrate the ability for MgO panels to provide fire-resistance in buildings. \n• Assess the acoustical capabilities of MgO panels in terms of meeting or exceeding code requirements for multifamily buildings. \n• Compare and contrast the use of MgO structural panels with other floor underlayment options\, particularly wet-laid gypsum. \n• Provide best practice guidance when specifying MgO panels in code recognized assemblies.
