Quonochontaug is one of RI’s barrier beach communities. It’s centrally located on a string of beaches running from the Connecticut line to Narragansett Bay. Modest shingled cottages are rapidly being replaced by big shingle style houses; gambrels being the most popular.

On the fringe of the neighborhood, our site abuts a tidal pond to the north east and the coast on the south. Wetland and zoning setbacks left a small buildable area, so the house had to go vertically to satisfy a program for a family of seven. They outgrew the former 60’s ranch on site and wanted a summer retreat to entertain and enjoy the summer breezes. Buggy wetlands made screened porches essential.

The new house had to be raised off the ground (nine feet) for flood protection and had to meet strict height limitations. The owners requested a more modern look;  defiantly not a gambrel.
