Comments from the Jury:
- This renovation and adaptive reuse approach re-energized the former power station by enlivening and re-inventing the interior while preserving its historic character.
- A thoughtful logic was followed in the planning of the space, as each section of the building was examined based off a number of criteria which included existing window opening locations, existing column grid spacing, natural light conditions, ability to establish visual connections, and what floor to floor heights could be achieved based off minimizing visual impact of new floor levels with exterior historic façade and window placement.
- The establishment of an atrium through the main corridor showcases the ornamental historical details of the original structure, while also bringing natural light into the center of the building.
- Through this effort, the team was able to strategically place the program within the building to not only preserve and amplify the history of the building, but to create flexible 21st century spaces that foster collaboration between the schools.
