WEBINAR: Atlas of Accountability: Empowering Planners to Build Resilient Communities
1 LU | HSW
Presented by Rebuild by Design
Course description: As extreme weather increasingly impacts communities across the U.S., designers, planners, and policymakers are tasked with developing strategies to mitigate these effects. The Atlas of Accountability, an interactive mapping tool, offers valuable insights into localized climate disaster impacts. This presentation will demonstrate how the Atlas can be utilized to analyze climate disaster impacts, guiding the design and development of resilient physical and social infrastructure.
Participants will learn to identify areas of vulnerability and prioritize investments that provide the greatest social return. Key findings reveal that 91% of counties experienced at least one major disaster declaration between 2011 and 2023, resulting in $106.4 billion in federal post-disaster funds. Attendees will learn strategies to shift from reactive to proactive approaches in community planning and disaster preparedness.
The session will provide strategies for integrating the Atlas’ findings to inform long-term planning, policy, and design, and secure state-level support for climate resilience projects. By focusing on actionable insights and collaboration, the session will present examples of successful cross-sector partnerships, equipping planners with the tools and knowledge needed to enhance community resilience.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand regional climate vulnerabilities and their implications for infrastructure planning
- Gain practical skills in leveraging mapping tools for data-driven planning and stakeholder communication
- Explore collaborative strategies for integrating pre-disaster preparedness into planning processes
- Learn how to develop strategies to enhance community resilience.
