RISD Department of Architecture Lecture Series: Assistant Professor Brett Schneider Conversation
Thu February 23, 2017 at 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Bayard Ewing Building, BEB 106 231 South Main Street, Providence RI
Brett Schneider is the Senior Associate at Guy Nordenson and Associates (structural engineers) in New York NY and Assistant Professor of Architecture at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence RI. In his almost 20 years at Guy Nordenson and Associates, he has contributed to the structural engineering of projects with leading architects including: Michael Maltzan Architecture, Steven Holl Architects, SANAA, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Johnston Marklee, and Pei Cobb Freed amongst many others.
This lecture examines the structural engineering of four projects: SoHo Loft Stair with Architecture Research Office (1999), Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion with SANAA (2006)), JPL Administration Building with Michael Maltzan Architecture (2010), and Chicago Horizon with Ultramoderne (2015). The chronological presentation of these projects traces the development of a model of collaboration (here called Conversations), and touches on questions of generalist vs specialist knowledge, holistic vs ad hoc solutions, and how might creativity in engineering design be fostered.
