Course Description: Richmond Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in NYC and has many beautiful, classical revival structures. Discover the rich history of Richmond Hill™s beautiful churches, the oldest dating back to 1874.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain how Richmond Hill was planned, designed, and developed as it pertains to its historic churches
- Discuss the role of zoning ordinances and historical designations that help preserve historic places of worship
- View examples of historic churches in the area and how they were created to improve the quality of residents’ health, safety, and welfare
- Define the relation of local historians to the preservation of historic churches in Richmond Hill, and the relevance to other churches in adjacent neighborhood
