Course Description: The Providence Public Library conducted a major renovation of its facility at 150 Empire Street in Providence, RI to better meet the needs of the community and the existing collections. The THINK AGAIN Building Transformation reconfigured the 1954 portion of the building into a modern information and gathering space, updated and reconnected the Donald J. Farish auditorium, and created a new climate-controlled home for the library’s special collections, which include numerous rare and historic volumes. https://www.provlib.org/construction-gallery/
Learning Objectives:
- Learn how this historical building renovation project was designed to address health and safety systems, upgrades and major infrastructure improvements.
- Learn about how the climate-controlled special collections space was designed to meet the library’s requirements for HVAC equipment, which included air quality standards, energy efficiency, and noise.
- Participants will discover how the resulting lighting scheme maximizes daylight and creates a salubrious learning environment by the use of energy-efficient LED lighting.
- Participants will discover why building commissioning is important for equipment operation, energy efficiency and environmental resources.
