International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum • 6th Annual Architectural Symposium: Eve of the Gilded Age

{{stark{{In Newport from the 1830s through the 1870s, talented architects designed many influential buildings, introducing stylistic elements and a grand scale that distinguished their work from the earlier Colonial and Federal periods. These innovations are the very characteristics which would become the hallmarks of the late 19th century Gilded Age. Despite often being overlooked, this period saw the construction of scores of houses built in revival and European influenced styles – from the Gothic Revival flourishes of the 1830s and 1840s through the mansard and Italianate compositions of the 1850s and 1860s, to the picturesque rusticity in the work of Upjohn and Hunt in the 1860s and 1870s. By the dawn of the Gilded Age, Newport played a leading role as an inspiration to the Colonial Revival style.
Eve of the Gilded Age: Newport Architecture 1830 to 1880 will offer a unique opportunity to examine this time period and its architects’ influence on Newport’s landscape. This sixth annual one-day symposium includes lectures by prominent architectural historians and tours of four magnificent buildings.
