We All Float On: The Advantages of Floating Hardwood Floors
Course description: Traditional solid hardwood floors are nailed or glued down, and over the last 100 years, there have been no significant technological advancements in the solid wood flooring industry. New floating methods have been developed leading to more flexible, healthful, and sustainable options in natural materials. This course is designed to teach participants the characteristics of floating floor assemblies that increase resilience to wear and promote adaptive reuse of flooring materials.
- Learning about new innovations in solid hardwood flooring and how they compared to the previous alternatives, and positive implications moving forward.
- Understand how floating assemblies improve hardwood flooring performance while reducing the constant need to replace and discard floors every 5 to 20 years depending on wood species.
Whole Woods: Why Solid Hardwoods are the Sustainable Solution for the Future
Course description: Solid hardwood materials sequester roughly 1/2 of their weight in carbon and thereby represent a significant advantage in the construction of green buildings. Additional benefits are provided when materials are locally sourced and manufactured using wind and solar power. This course will explore the additional “carbon positive” benefits of innovative floating floor assemblies that are comprised of natural solid hardwoods.
- Weigh the costs and benefits of using solid woods in flooring applications
- Describe the tangible sustainable benefits of using solid wood in construction
